Yushchenko: Construction of new gas pipelines will not harm Ukraine

Realization of “South Stream” project will not harm Ukraine. President Viktor Yushchenko told yesterday in Istanbul before his departure to Kyiv.

According to the President, in the scope of negotiation concerning construction of new gas- and oil pipelines, tendency is not changed – place and role of Ukraine as a transit state is and will remain a key one for Europe. “We must think how to develop and maintain our mission,” Yushchenko said.

According to him, world tendencies prove that extraction and production of these energy recourses will be increased. That’s why Yushchenko is convinced that alternative transit routes will not reduce role of Ukraine as a transit country.

“I would say that perspective of Ukraine as a transit country is being increased…Today I optimistically estimate place of Ukraine in the energy map,” he said.
