European Commission President Jose Manuel
Barroso says he got assurances from Ukraine President Viktor Yushchenko
that he would not reopen a sensitive deal with Moscow that restarted
flows of gas to EU countries last week.
Barroso held talks with Yushchenko at EU headquarters on Tuesday. The EU chief says the 27-nation
bloc remains "very disappointed" over the Ukraine-Russia gas dispute,
but he says it is no reason to stall efforts to forge closer EU-Ukraine
ties.
Yushchenko says he is now seeking international investors to help
upgrade and modernize Ukraine's energy network and pipelines so it can
regain the trust of EU clients.
An investors meeting is planned for March 23 in Brussels.
