Biofuel engines may represent future of ag vehicles

20/04/2007

Diesel powered tractors, trucks and trains could be a thing of the past, with biofuel based engines being developed for use in agriculture.

A US company has designed the world's first ethanol fuelled locomotive and plans to use the technology in other high-powered engines like farm machinery.

Engineer Tom Mack says the technology could cut fuel costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"We feel if it works for locomotives, to be able to provide a high horsepowered engine using ethanol, then there is potential for use in not only the trucking industry," he said.

"We're looking at other forms of [bio-fuelled] equipment such as construction equipment or farm equipment.

"Farmers themselves are saying boy if this works we'd really like to see this used in our agricultural equipment."
